Mackintosh has meticulously recorded the structure of the plant using colour to emphasise the richness of the glossy green leaves and the architectural arrangement of a single cluster of ripe berries in the centre of the composition. Two further berry clusters are shown in outline along with a carefully made arrangement of leaves and stems depicting the twisting, climbing nature of Hedera helix. A single ‘whiplash’ tendril – beloved motif of art nouveau – stylishly anchors the drawing’s cartouche which bears both the initials of Charles and also of Margaret.
