Here he made New Year Snow in his characteristic style. Dry watercolour brushstrokes, reducing and rearranging a scene to intensify its effect, muted greens and russet browns.Eric Ravilious developed a ‘textured watercolour’ technique in his early career. His muted colour palette and cross hatching technique originated from his earlier mastery of wood engraving and give his works a beautiful coherence.Ravilious’ rendering of the valley view creates a sense of enclosure in the spare winter landscape. A single man-made object, the sheep feeder, grounds and draws us in. Open airy skies and the snow dusted landscape create a lightness of atmosphere and dreamy quality. Artfully observed details; tussocks of grass emerging from snow and slate grey shards of light from the water bring a sense of moving through a wild untamed landscape on a winter walk.
