It was produced as one of a series of illustrations for a special limited edition of “The writings of Gilbert White of Selborne” ( 1938 ) by the celebrated naturalist and “father of ecology”.Eric Ravilious, an enthusiast of the author, urged his own students to read White’s writings and he was delighted by the 1937 commission writing to a friend “It is quite the best book I’ve ever been given to do and I love doing it.” His illustrations are deeply rooted in the text and and show White’s garden and the surrounding landscape. For Considerable falls of snow he interpreted White’s –“considerable falls of snow, which lay deep and uniform on the ground without any drifting, wrapping up the more humble vegetation in perfect security” – first written by the author in 1789 as a key observation of the insulating effect of deep snow on small plants.– Ravilious depicts a charming rural idyll where everything is as it should be in nature; a scene of balance, rightness and harmony.Eric Ravilious was one of the leading British Neo-Romantic artists in the 1920s and 30s. He helped to bring about a rebirth of printmaking (especially wood engraving), producing numerous engravings for leading publishers. His “unrivalled sense of lively decorative pattern” in wood can clearly be seen in his prints and also informed his technique in drawing and watercolour. He used a range of engraving tools, some self-made from old keys and metal rods stuck into champagne-cork handles.His technique at once captures the energy of the natural world whilst at the same time conveying the intense stillness of the snowy English landscape.
