This was a period of extraordinary productivity with over 70 works produced during that year. Klee’s Bauhaus work was strongly influenced by colour theory; thoughtfully deployed here. Many of his 1922 paintings feature colour gradations in graphic, blocky forms. Harbinger of Autumn utilises multiple shades in the green – violet range forming an abstract geometric aura field against which the contained, stylised tree is rendered using precisely contrasted russet. Both the colour and our focus is intensified by this pairing causing the image to vibrate and take life when viewed. It is a powerful and deceptively simple work with many layers of meaning typical of Klee’s deeply considered approach.
