Because the leaf of this tree has a long history of use for various purposes, neem is commonly referred to as heal-all and “the village pharmacy.” In powdered or essential oil form, neem is used in organic gardening and to make many different kinds of personal care products, including soaps, shampoos, skin lotions and creams. Neem is also an ingredient in herbal tooth powders. Neem essential oil is believed to help delay the aging of skin and early wrinkling. It can help boost collagen production, and even reduce the appearance of scars. Neem oil may even reduce the risk of warts appearing on the skin, as well as reduce acne and boils. Neem oil added to a bath can help ease viral rashes. It is believed to even help wound healing. Neem oil is high in fat content and has antifungal properties, which means it can nourish and help dry hair and itchy scalp, as well as help with dandruff. It is also used to help hair loss, scalp psoriasis, and even head lice. Many dental care products include neem oil for its antiseptic properties that can help bleeding gums, toothache, and bad breath. It can also be included in personal care products to help eliminate body odor. Neem oil contains azadirachtin, which is a natural pesticide. Properly diluted in coconut oil and applied to the skin, it can help repel mosquitos for up to 12 hours. Adding neem oil to standing water can even prevent mosquitoes from breeding in that area. Added to surrounding soil, or lightly rubbed underneath leaves of garden plants, neem oil is an exceptional repellant for garden bugs like locusts, beetles, mites, nematodes, and caterpillars. Diluted and applied to in-home surfaces, neem oil is great for repelling termites, ants, and cockroaches. Applied to furniture fabric, it can even help control bed bugs. Neem oil is a carrier oil and does not require dilution. Historical Uses:  analgesic, anthelmintic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antiseptic, anti-aging, wrinkles, scars, warts, boils, acne, rash, abrasions, grazes, scrapes, cuts, wounds, sores, insecticide, pesticide, sedative, itching, dry skin, psoriasis, eczema, parasitic skin infection, skin irritation, ringworm, scabies, ulceration, bacterial skin infection, hair loss, scalp infection, dry scalp, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, head lice, pimples, insecticide, insect repellant, insect bites and stings, bleeding gums, toothache, bad breath, body odor Mystical Attributes:  The Neem tree is rich in spiritual qualities, and it is believed to be inhabited by divas, illumined beings. Venerated by Hindus, it is dedicated to the Goddess Mariamma who is believed to preside over all epidemics. A bunch of Neem leaves is hung above the door as a sign of the presence of this goddess in the house. India’s earliest societies used Neem leaves to exorcise spirits. Before a girl’s marriage in India, a ceremony may be performed with the Neem tree to determine if the marriage will last. The Neem represents the girl, and it is married to the banyan tree, which is the symbol of her husband. If she is fated to lose her husband, the banyan tree will die. Neem is a sacred protector of plants and crops. Dilute in water and either pour into the soil around plants or rub on the underside of leaves. Mystical Intentions:  health and healing, exorcism, marriage, farming, gardening, purification Smell:  Neem oil is described as having a garlicy sulfur smell. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Neem is native to India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The tree thrives in warm, dry regions. Its resistance to drought and tolerance to heat are factors that contribute to its long life span of up to 200 years. It is a fast-growing tree that can reach a height of 15–20 meters (49–66 feet), rarely to 35–40 meters (115–130 feet). It is evergreen, but in severe drought it may shed most or nearly all of its leaves. The branches are wide and spreading. The fairly dense crown is round and may reach a diameter of 15–20 meters (49–66 feet) in old, free-standing specimens. The opposite, pinnate leaves are 20–40 centimeters (7.9–16 in) long, with 20 to 31 medium to dark green leaflets about 3–8 centimeters (1.2–3.1 in) long. The terminal leaflet is often missing. The petioles are short. The white, fragrant flowers grow in more-or-less drooping axillary panicles which are up to 25 cm (9.8 in) long. The inflorescences, which branch up to the third degree, bear from 150 to 250 flowers. An individual flower is 5–6 millimeters (0.20–0.24 in) long and 8–11 millimeters (0.31–0.43 in) wide. Protandrous, bisexual flowers and male flowers exist on the same individual tree. The fruit is a smooth (glabrous) olive-like drupe which varies in shape from elongate oval to nearly round, and when ripe is 1.4–2.8 centimeters (0.55–1.1 in) by 1.0–1.5 centimeters (0.39–0.59 in). The fruit skin (exocarp) is thin and the bitter-sweet pulp (mesocarp) is yellowish-white and very fibrous. The mesocarp is 0.3–0.5 centimeters (0.12–0.20 in) thick. The white, hard inner shell (endocarp) of the fruit encloses one, rarely two or three, elongated seeds (kernels) having a brown seed coat. Neem trees grow in tropical and semi-tropical locations; they thrive in areas with sub-arid to sub-humid conditions.  They grow best on well drained deep and sandy soils. Neem seeds are only viable for about 30 days after they are harvested, and fruit ripens in mid-summer. Sow seeds as soon as they are ripe in a greenhouse or cold frame. Transplant seedlings to pots when they are large enough. Harvest neem leaves throughout the season, if you expect to harvest year-round, be sure your tree is getting ample light for new growth. Leaves may be dried and ground into powder for later use. Store dried neem leaves and powdered dried neem leaf in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
