In China, it is commonly called Ho-Shou-Wu (which means “black-haired man”) in reference to the man of the same name who lived during the Tang dynasty period who allegedly consumed Fo-Ti daily and lived until the age of 132 years—or 197, or 256, depending on the version of the story. It’s used to treat a variety of ailments and has been linked to a number of health benefits, such as healthy aging, longevity, and virility. Many people take it to promote general good health, especially in old age. However, this herb is also used to treat various health conditions, such as diabetes, hair loss, heart disease, constipation, and cancer. In test tubes, Fo-Ti has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antibacterial, and antitumor effects. It is also used to treat headaches, muscle soreness, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, and infertility. The biological compounds found in Fo-Ti may also positively affect blood cholesterol levels and improve conditions caused by an age-related decline of the nervous system, such as Alzheimer’s. According to a review published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, some research suggests that a compound found in Fo-Ti may help treat Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Researchers have found that it may have neuroprotective properties and antioxidant effects. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found “surprisingly high estrogen activity” in Fo-Ti. This suggests it might provide a potential estrogen replacement source for menopausal women. One study that tested 32 plants used for menopause in traditional Chinese medicine found that Fo-Ti had the greatest estrogenic activity. Studies show that Fo-Ti appears to transition hair follicles from damaged, dormant stages into rejuvenated, fast-growing ones that resemble hair growth patterns in the young. One study even found that taking Fo-Ti prevented and reversed hair graying. Shampoos containing the herb help combat hair loss and graying. Fo-Ti extracts are used in creams and ointments for skin conditions. The unprocessed root, known as white Fo-Ti due to its light color, is traditionally used for treating constipation or is applied topically to the skin for treating acne, athlete’s foot, or dermatitis. Note that our Fo-Ti has been processed. The root slices have cured by simmering in a black bean liquid. It is also grown in Japan and Taiwan. It is an herbaceous perennial vine that grows to 2–4 m tall from a woody tuber. The leaves are 3–7 cm long and 2–5 cm broad, broad arrowhead-shaped, with an entire margin. The flowers are 6–7 mm diameter, white or greenish-white, produced on short, dense panicles up to 10–20 cm long in summer to mid autumn. The fruit is an achene 2.5–3 mm long. Fo-Ti grows along the banks of streams and in valley shrub thickets in sun or part shade. It grows in an ordinary garden soil but prefers a moisture retentive not too fertile soil. Sow seeds in spring in a cold frame. Germination is usually easy. When they are large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings into individual pots and plant them in the summer if they have reached sufficient size. If not, over winter in a cold frame and plant out the following spring after the last expected frosts. Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Fo-Ti roots are harvested in the autumn, preferably from plants 3-4 years old, and are dried for later use as slices or a powder. Store dried Fo-Ti powder or dried Fo-Ti slices in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
