It has been used in working with lucid and vivid dreams, and is believed to help relieve nightmares. The leaves and whole plant are digestive, diuretic, febrifuge, hypotensive, narcotic, sedative and stimulant. Use of the plant depresses the central nervous system, while it is also reputedly anesthetic and hallucinogenic. It has been used internally historically in the treatment of diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, colic, hiccups, malaria and feverish illnesses. Externally, some use it to ease scorpion bites and to remove ticks. For Samhain and Dia de los Muertos celebrations, the flowers are believed to attract spirits and are used to decorate grave sites, altars, and shrines. The plant has also been used as a talisman, rubbed on the chest to ensure safety when crossing a river. It is also regarded as protective when travelling to the underworld. Marigolds are also used for protection from cruelty and jealousy. The leaves have an anise-like flavor. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: It is believed that Tagetes originates from Guatemala. Mexican Marigold herb needs lots of sun, enjoys humid heat, and can be grown in pots and brought inside in the winter. This seed takes 5-15 days to germinate and should be sown in spring, but it can grow in pots. It needs full sun and will get 2-3ft/60-90cm high. Set plants 8-12″/20-30cm apart. It is a perennial in subtropical areas. Elsewhere it grows as an annual. You can harvest in “cut-and-come-again” style, cutting off a couple of branches when you need it.
